Equally significant to the expansion of our academic partnerships was the time dedicated to strengthening the historic ties and missional partnership between the United States and Korean Presbyterian churches.
During our stay in Seoul, our delegation visited the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Korea office. We had the great privilege of meeting with Rev. Hyeyoung Lee, PC(USA) Global Ecumenical Liaison and Director of the PC(USA) Korea Mission Office, alongside Rev. Kurt Esslinger, PC(USA) Global Ecumenical Liaison for East Asia.
I share a very special, long-standing friendship with Rev. Kurt Esslinger. What is truly remarkable is that during his childhood, he lived with his parents right in Kerrville, Texas, the very home of Schreiner University. As seen in our photos, him holding up a Tivy High School banner with a bright smile perfectly captures the incredible, serendipitous connections we discovered halfway across the globe.
After our productive official meeting and a wonderful lunch together, we explored the nearby Gwangjang Market under the warm guidance of Rev. Hyeyoung and Rev. Kurt. Immersing ourselves in the vibrant local atmosphere, our delegation enjoyed a wonderful time picking out unique Korean souvenirs for our loved ones. During our discussions, both liaisons listened intently to our presentation of Schreiner University’s vision. They graciously promised to act as a bridge, introducing and connecting Schreiner University to the various churches and educational institutions they visit throughout Asia. We expect this support to be a tremendous asset to our global network.
This meeting carried additional weight because Rev. Hyeyoung Lee also serves as the Korea Site Director for the PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program. We were deeply proud that Schreiner alumna Autumn Cortez, who accompanied our delegation, shares a direct connection with this program. Selected as a candidate following my recommendation, Autumn has been serving as a YAV in Korea for a one-year term that began in August 2025. Seeing her thrive in this role was profoundly moving. Her presence served as a tangible and inspiring example of how Schreiner’s faith-based education results in impactful global service.
Our time together naturally transitioned from these productive discussions to a wonderful traditional Korean meal, where we continued our fellowship in a more personal setting. Following lunch, under the warm guidance of Rev. Hyeyoung and Rev. Kurt, we explored the nearby Gwangjang Market. Immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic local landmark, our delegation enjoyed the opportunity to witness authentic Korean life and pick out unique souvenirs for our loved ones.
Next, we will share a very special spiritual moment from our journey at the historic Saemoonan Presbyterian Church.
