After concluding our time in Seoul, our delegation led by President Dr. Charlie McCormick traveled south to Daegu to visit Keimyung University. Established in 1954 by American Presbyterian missionaries, Keimyung was founded with a mission to nurture Christian values and global awareness. Over the decades, it has grown into a prestigious institution that balances academic excellence with deep social responsibility.

One of the most moving moments of our visit was standing before the “Chogajib,” a small, restored thatched-roof house that served as the original Jejungwon in 1899. This humble site was the first Western-style hospital in the region, established by missionaries to serve those in greatest need. Seeing the roots of this mission was a profound spiritual experience for our entire team.

The transformation from that small seed of faith is nothing short of miraculous. On our way to the campus, we saw the new Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital, a magnificent 25-story facility. With over 1,000 beds, it now stands as a primary medical center for the entire region. Witnessing this leap from a tiny thatched house to a world-class medical landmark, we could only marvel at the amazing grace and the fruits of dedicated missionary work.

Inside the campus, we were equally captivated by the “Hanhakchon,” a beautiful complex of traditional Hanok buildings. This elegant architecture showcases the university’s commitment to preserving Korean heritage while fostering a modern, global academic environment.

During our visit, we had the honor of meeting with President Dr. Synn Ilhi. Building upon our shared Presbyterian heritage, our institutions officially agreed to promote extensive academic and cultural cooperation. Through new Student Exchange Programs, Schreiner students will now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Korean culture and residential life in Daegu.

We are particularly excited about the synergy between our Nursing programs. Keimyung University is home to one of the top-ranked Nursing schools in South Korea, featuring state-of-the-art facilities and a focus on clinical excellence. We are actively exploring joint research on healthcare innovation and international clinical rotations, ensuring our students are equipped to lead in a global healthcare landscape.

The partnership with Keimyung University represents a journey from humble service to global leadership. We look forward to the transformative opportunities this relationship will bring to our students and faculty.

Our next stop is Daejeon to visit Hannam University, where our historical ties run even deeper. Stay tuned for Part 4!
